Relational love through the eyes of Christ
Brothers and Sisters, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth. 1 John 3:18 CSB
Even if you consider yourself a loner, everyone has a relationship with someone; family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, customers, and even a stranger on the street.
Consider the relationships you have established with these folks. How would you describe your relationship with them? Would you say your relationship with them is good, healthy, and mutually beneficial? Do they add value to your life?
On the other side of that, how might these folks describe their relationship with you?
However you answered, know that there is a standard by which we should measure our relationships, and that standard is Jesus Christ.
We can see in Scripture that Jesus’ relationships were rooted in love and compassion, so that should be the case for each of our relationships; and yes, even that stranger on the street.
In that, the best relationships always have love and compassion at the core: love through service (Galatians 5:13); and love through stewardship (1 Peter 4:10). When we love using these standards, we are using the gifts God has blessed us with to help one another, love through sacrifice of our time, talents, and, yes, even our treasure. (1 John 3:16-18)
Notice that, with Christ centered relational love, it shows us that even God is not above serving the needs of others (Mark 10:45). It also reminds us that much is expected of those whom God favors (Luke 12:48), and we are also commissioned to share our blessings, and not hoard them. (Luke 6:38).
Ask yourself, is love and compassion at the center of your relationships?
If it is, then pray that God will continue to bless and nurture those relationships to His glory and each of your benefit . But if you see that even one of your relationships is lacking godly love and compassion, then pray to the Father, right now, that He will teach you how to foster His love and compassion in the midst of that broken relationship.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
